We are sorry to have to announce that our third recruitment Fun Day with a Bowls Bash game has been cancelled due to heavy rain. The next date is Saturday 19th August 2023 from 2pm so please come along and have a go. ![]()
![]() A beautiful sunny evening on Wednesday 21st June saw around 15 volunteer members of the club help close to 40 members of local company Topcon enjoy a great evening of bowls. None of the Topcon staff had played bowls before and most were from other European countries, but after some hasty tuition and a few loose woods they soon got their eye in. In fact, by the end of it, we would have happily signed up a good half of them as members :-) The bar was open throughout and a mountain of pizzas arrived around 8.45pm to feed everyone whilst the trophy was handed out to the winning team - plus a huge roar and the wooden spoon for the bottom team. We all had a great time and I am sure that goes for Topcon too. A huge thanks for booking the clubhouse and for displaying such great team spirit. The generous donation you gave to us will be put to good use. Bowls’ Big Weekend takes place across Friday 26th to Monday 29th May 2023!

I brief reminder that we are running a session this Tuesday evening 21st March, 2023 at the Clubhouse for any members (or potential members) that would like a run through of the Rink Diary and the Teams Games section. We have a projector and screen so everyone will be able to see. Even if you are not planning to log on and use the rink diary yourself, it will be worth attending to understand how it operates. You can have a rink buddy and you will at least know what the system is able to do to make your life easier registering for games or booking a rink yourself. Having the online system means that you or your rink buddy can quickly check to see if anyone is down at the club - without having to travel down to the green to find it all locked up and empty. We hope to answer all of your questions and explain how it all works. We reckon about an hour should do it. At the moment 11 people have confirmed as attending so, I hope we can get some more. Please send me a quick note if you can make it to: [email protected]. So far we have: If you cannot make this Tuesday there will be a follow up training session on Saturday 1st April at 3pm. There are a similar number booked for that session at the moment. Of course you are welcome to attend both sessions. Team Selectors / Subadmins Most of you are now signed up on the Rink Diary, but as yet only one person other than Julia and myself is registered as a sub admin to be able to create and manage games within the Teams section. The second part of the evening will therefore be for any team or inter-club competition selectors/organisers. Click here 1st December, 2022 by Daniel Ellicott
We are delighted to announce that entries for our individual and club National Competitions are now open. Always popular and keenly contested, 19 National Competition winners will be crowned at Victoria Park in August 2023, alongside 16 National Championship victors. We have also announced our schedule for the 2023 Bowls England National Finals in order that players and spectators may start to plan their year ahead. National Competitions Our competitions are open to players of all abilities – with a range of events designed to meet your individual requirements. They give you a great opportunity to challenge yourself and make new friends or perhaps rekindle old rivalries. We particularly welcome entries from those who may not have entered one of our competitions before, as this is a great opportunity to improve your game, test yourself against different players and perhaps win a place, and a few bragging rights, at the National Finals at Royal Leamington Spa. With all area winners proceeding directly to the National Finals in 2023, your chances of treading the hallowed turf are significantly increased! All events are organised on a knock-out basis, with the early rounds played locally and the National Finals at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa, which hosted the Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. So, whether you are a regular competitor or new to our sport, we have plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. Entries are now open – enter online here The closing date for entries is 9am on Wednesday 1st March. 2023 National Finals The National Finals will run from Thursday 10th to Sunday 27th August inclusive. We have listened to feedback from this summer in relation to the Regional Finals and number of qualifiers from each county. With this in mind, our schedule has been developed consistent with a number of key principles, including but not limited to:
The 2023 schedule has been devised to minimise clashes. Historically we have sought to accommodate players in more than one event scheduled to run at the same time. Due to the volume of events and the multiple qualification of some competitors, it is inevitable that a small number of players will have matches that clash. For the best interest of the event, we have developed a clear policy on duplications to allow players, clubs and counties to make informed decisions. In 2023, in all rounds of National Championships all players with a scheduling duplication will be accommodated. We shall also seek to accommodate players with scheduling duplications in the following National Competition events, where time and green availability permits:
We would encourage players/teams to review the schedule prior to entry and be mindful of the implications of entering the following competitions if successful in the National Championships or National Competitions:
National Championships
We must make all players considering entering National Competitions aware that Bowls Dorset has put forward a proposition to the Bowls England AGM in February 2023 proposing 70 qualifiers (two per county) from 2023. Bowls England does not support this proposition because it will:
National Competitions Review We have committed to deliver a National Competitions Review and a working party is being assembled. Their recommendations, if approved by the Board, will be implemented for 2024. Whilst we are delighted that competitions retain a good level of popularity within our membership, we are also acutely aware of a number of challenges. Entry numbers have been in decline for many years (particularly in women’s events), the latter stages are being dominated by a reducing pool of players, age bands at junior and senior level may not be conducive to encouraging participation and the competition landscape is complicated for those considering taking part. Providing the right competitions at the appropriate level is fundamental to the future of our sport. National domestic competitions should deliver great experiences for players, inspire new people to play our sport, stretch and prepare our best players for international bowls and increase our sport’s visibility. The review will inform how this is best achieved. Ideally, we would wish to complete the review and implement positive changes that take our sport forward, provide fairness across the country and better meet the needs of all bowlers. We shall shortly be advertising for members to join this group so please do keep your eye out if interested in working with us on the National Competitions Review. All stakeholders will be consulted as part of this process. edit. The Management Team look forward to seeing everyone there.
Starting this Thursday be sure to catch up with all of the action as both experienced and new players go head to head for the key trophies. Below is a breakdown of the matches, timings and players so come along and support them. Check out Bowling Tours on their website: https://bowlingtours.co.uk
This comp was first held in 2019 and won by John Davis and Barry Wales. It is a quick-fire affair with pairs picked from a hat and all played out in the one afternoon.
We could not play in 2020 (COVID) and in 2021 it was won by Julia Stannard and Goff Lane and John and Goff made it to the finals on opposing teams. This year they features once again. The final was played over 5 ends and both teams scoring 3 and 2 each and was won by a single shot 6 shots to 5 by Paul Stephens and John Davis. The unfortunate losing finalists by the narrowest of margins where Jane Beardsell and Goff Lane. Thanks to all members that took part and to the organisers. Dear Colleagues,
The retiming of the WD Benevolent Triples competition last year (I moved it into September), seemed to work well. So this year I settled on the equivalent date, Friday 16 September 2022. Gloucester City and Gloucester Spa Bowling Clubs are again providing the venue. [ Even if it is your club Finals Weekend, there is every likelihood that any games you need to play can be scheduled on the two main days, rather than Friday evening !] Anyway, lots of people have found this a very pleasant and relaxing day of bowling, with the added possibility of winning a national title without even going outside our own county ! Would Secretaries and WD Delegates please ensure that this information is once more circulated within your club and hopefully displayed on the notice board. Many thanks indeed. All details on the sheet supplied. Regards, Lindsay WD Secretary |
